Las Posadas
Las Posadas are a cherished Catholic tradition deeply rooted in Mexican and broader Hispanic culture, celebrated each year from December 16 through December 24. More than a novena, Las Posadas are a living reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem as they searched for shelter before the birth of Jesus.
The word posada means “inn” or “lodging.” Each night of the nine-day celebration, the community gathers—often in homes, parish halls, or around the church—to symbolically walk with Mary and Joseph. Through song, prayer, Scripture, and reflection, participants remember the challenges of welcoming Christ into a world that often has no room for Him.
A central element of Las Posadas is the sung dialogue, traditionally led by two groups. One group represents Mary and Joseph asking for shelter, while the other represents the innkeepers who initially refuse them. The final response welcomes the Holy Family with joy, prayer, and hospitality—reminding us of our call to open our hearts to Christ and to one another.
Las Posadas are also a powerful expression of Hispanic faith and culture. They bring together families, neighbors, and generations, blending prayer with community life. After the prayers, it is customary to share food, fellowship, and cultural traditions such as hot chocolate, tamales, and sometimes a piñata for children. These moments reflect the values of hospitality, generosity, and communal joy that are central to Hispanic spirituality.
Spiritually, Las Posadas invite us to reflect on themes of hope, perseverance, welcome, and solidarity—especially with migrants, the poor, and all who seek refuge. As we journey through these nine nights, we prepare our hearts not only to celebrate Christmas, but to receive Christ anew in our daily lives.
Our parish celebrates Las Posadas from December 16 through December 24. Please consult our December bulletins for specific dates, times, and locations, and join us as we walk together in prayer, tradition, and joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus.
