This is a message directed to teens from which adults can also benefit. Parents, you may need to read this together with your children. Let us think carefully about our use of social media and the relationships we form.

      Most of you know that I opened a Facebook account just before Christmas. I have shared serious messages which I or others have written. I have posted photos of events here at the parish. I have shared a few interesting videos (like the little boy who hugged the “spider man” piñata instead of hitting it) and attempted to be humorous with some of you by what I have posted. I have offered many blessings for birthdays and special occasions and I have “messaged” encouragement and prayers to many people.

      I have also read many of your posts and comments. Most of the time, I am very impressed by your thoughtfulness. However, there are times when some of you have pushed the post/send button too quickly. Please think before you post!

      What I have NEVER done is use the “b-word,” or any form of the “f-word” or the “s-word,” or referred to someone by the “n-word.” There is no place for such words in “social media.” If you cannot stop from using such language, do it by means of a private message or a text message. Please do not subject all of us to that language. And, by the way – whites, Hispanics, and every other ethnic group except African-Americans – you must not use any form of the “n-word.” You cannot say or write “n–ger” nor “n–ga.” In my opinion, African-Americans ought not to use those words either.

      Furthermore, there is no place for bullying by means of social media, or anywhere else. Some people think that they can say whatever they want by Facebook, Twitter, etc. The basic value of respect of self and others still applies. Indeed, the COMMANDMENT “to love others as Christ has loved us” is still fundamental. All users of social media would be well-served by doing a review of the things you have written (use “Activity”) Be respectful!

      Finally, and this is funny to me, when you take a “selfie” in the big mirror in your bathroom, please close the lid on the toilet! Or even better, try to block the seat with your body so that we do not have to see it. Some of you take very nice selfies which are ruined by the appearance of bathroom furniture.

      ONE FINAL MESSAGE: Happy Birthday, Dad! May God’s blessing abound for you (81 years on April 2).
